St Mary's Primary & Nursery School, Bellaghy, Magherafelt

Welcome

On behalf of the children, staff and governors of St Mary’s Primary School and Nursery Unit, I am delighted to welcome you to our school website.

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School was established in 1964 and is situated in the middle of the town of Bellaghy. County Derry. Our Nursery Unit was opened in 2002, expanding our provision for the children of Bellaghy.

We believe that all children are life time learners. We know that children learn best when they feel happy, secure and well cared for. Therefore our first priority is the provision of strong pastoral care in a nurturing environment of catholic faith. We aim to develop in our children a passion and love of learning by providing an enriched, broad and balanced curriculum; that delivers a high quality, inclusive education for all, so that each may reach their full potential.

I sincerely hope that you will find our website to be an extremely useful resource, helping you to engage with your child’s educational journey through St Mary’s. Should you require any further information on admissions or would like to visit the school at any stage, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Mrs Mary McCann

Principal

P7 STEM Bridge Challenge Our P7 pupils took on a brilliant STEM challenge this week - designing and constructing a bridge using only raw pasta and marshmallows. With plenty of creativity, teamwork and problem solving on display. The children worked together to test which structures were the strongest and most stable. A special thanks to our WAU coordinator Mrs McAteer, for guiding and supporting the challenge. The pupils loved exploring entering skills in such a fun, hands on way. Mrs Convery is hoping the P7s can help in Klirea :)
Show and Tell Children in Primary 1 brought in their favourite toys for Show and Tell as part of our theme ‘In the ToyBox’. They were absolutely fantastic! The pupils told us all about their toys and answered any questions the class had about their toys. This was a great activity to build their confidence as well as developing their thinking skills about how toys work and what materials they are made from. Well done Primary 1!!

Wheely Fun in P6! As part of our WAU topic, ‘Back to the Future’, P6 have been finding out about machines before and after the Industrial Revolution. They created their own water wheels using recyclable materials and worked in small groups to create a model that would use flowing water to generate energy. P3 came to visit and ask questions!
School Council Anti-Bullying Competition Miss Elliott and the School Council were running a competition last week for all classes to create an Anti-Bullying poster. The School Council picked the winners from each class and they got a special treat of hot chocolate and cookies in the staff room! It was a tough decision with so many amazing entries.
