St Mary's Primary & Nursery School, Bellaghy, Magherafelt

Welcome

On behalf of the children, staff and governors of St Mary’s Primary School and Nursery Unit, I am delighted to welcome you to our school website.

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School was established in 1964 and is situated in the middle of the town of Bellaghy. County Derry. Our Nursery Unit was opened in 2002, expanding our provision for the children of Bellaghy.

We believe that all children are life time learners. We know that children learn best when they feel happy, secure and well cared for. Therefore our first priority is the provision of strong pastoral care in a nurturing environment of catholic faith. We aim to develop in our children a passion and love of learning by providing an enriched, broad and balanced curriculum; that delivers a high quality, inclusive education for all, so that each may reach their full potential.

I sincerely hope that you will find our website to be an extremely useful resource, helping you to engage with your child’s educational journey through St Mary’s. Should you require any further information on admissions or would like to visit the school at any stage, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Mrs Mary McCann

Principal

Ice-cream to the Rescue When the rain stopped play, we decided to CONE-tinue the fun another way! Sports Day may have been postponed, but a visit from the ice cream van ensured there were still plenty of smiles to go around. A scoop of happiness was just what we needed.
Book Workshop sponsored by Book Trust Recently, our Primary 2-4 pupils took part in a fantastic workshop organised and generously sponsored by the Book Trust. It was a delight to welcome author and illustrator Colleen Larmour, hear her share some of her wonderful stories and explore our creativity by producing illustrations inspired by her books. To make the experience even more memorable, every child received copies of two of Colleen’s books to take home. It was a truly enjoyable morning celebrating reading, storytelling and artistic expression.
Book Fair Thank you to everyone who came to our Annual Book Fair. It was a great success and we have earned £800 in free books from Scholastic! Special thanks to our P6 and 7 helpers, Zara and Pauline, for helping Mrs Fegan.
P6 and P7 visit the Folk Museum P6 and P7 had a great day exploring life in 19th century Ireland at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh. Learning about the causes and effects of the Irish Famine in their WAU Term 2 topic, they got first hand experience of how the Irish lived in the 1840s. The park guides were knowledgeable and keen for the children to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of long ago. Special thanks to the mums who came on the trip with us - Fiona, Lisa, Paula, Cathy, Amy and Eileen. On the bus home, a few super bikes were spotted in Cookstown which brightened up the long journey home!
P.1/2 Tree Hunt As part of our into the woods theme we were exploring different types of trees this week. We went on a walk to find different types of leaves. We then took them back to our classroom to classify them. We were amazed at all the different types of trees you can find in our local environment!
Feel Good Friday in P.1/2. We had great fun in our GAA gear today to celebrate feel good Friday at the end of Mental Health Week! We sang, danced, played and had fun with our friends.
Primary 4 Assembly Primary 4 proud led a beautiful class assembly this morning following the special occasion of their First Holy Communion. Through prayers, songs, reflections and thoughtful presentations, the children shared the joy and significance of receiving the important sacrament. Well done P4!
Sharing a little kindness on Thoughtful Thursday As part of our Mental Health Awareness Week celebrations, St. Mary’s shared some kindness on Thoughtful Thursday.
GAA Day and Mental Health Awareness Week During Mental Health Awareness Week, our pupils took part in a range of activities to promote positive wellbeing and emotional health. Classes enjoyed mindfulness sessions, outdoor learning, creative art activities, and class discussions focused on kindness, resilience, and friendship. We were delighted to see pupils engaging so positively and learning valuable ways to look after both their mental and emotional wellbeing. Tomorrow is our favourite day of the week ‘Feel Good Friday’ Children are invited to wear their GAA tops tomorrow!
